About the photographer
Sven Strömqvist is a professor of linguistics. His research concerns how languages shape thought, memory and attention. And how people from different corners of the world vary in the way they describe a given event. He is also an accomplished photographer and has had several exhibitions.

Says Sven: As compared to language, the camera is a tool of a very different kind. Once I started using a professional camera I became much more aware of qualities of light – qualities that lack expression in language. To me, photography is a way of viewing the world, exploring fragments, moments and perspectives and inviting viewers to explore and interpret the pictures. Over the past five years I have exhibited street photography as well as art photography of a more abstract, graphical expression. A sample of these photographs are included in the present series made for RD Modern Classics.
